* Trojan Horse and Trojan Museum

When uttered, Troy reminds people of the myths written by the great poet Homer, in the Iliad and Odyssey. According to the legends, the Trojan War lasted 10 years, and Achaens (Mycenaeans) owe their victory to Epeius, a master wooden sculptor. Designed by Odysseus, Epeius built a giant wooden horse statue, and Achaen warriors hid inside it. In conclusion, the wooden horse was taken into the city of Troy, where Achaen warriors emerge out of the horse and open the city gates, making way for the Achaen army.

In the City of Troy, located 15 miles from Çanakkale, the first wooden horse was built in 1950 but destroyed over time. Afterwards, many attempts were made to build another wooden horse and they failed, consequently the legendary Trojan Horse that greets visitors now is the one made by Warner Bros Co, used in the 2004 movie ’Troy’ starring Brad Pitt. Boasting gigantic proportions, the Trojan Horse statue was made using glass fibre. In 2004, with the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the giant wooden horse was given from the film company to Çanakkale as a gift.

Today, the Trojan Horse greets visitors at the entrance of the City of Troy.

The Troy Museum, on the other hand, is the first Turkish museum to receive prestigious awards in Europe and displays more than 2,000 artifacts, providing a fascinating journey into history.
